Wednesday’s semifinal will be a rematch of the CWS opener for the Aggies and Gators, in which Texas A&M stole a home run off Florida’s Cade Kurland by Texas A&M right fielder Jace Laviolette, who will be sidelined for the start of the game after suffering a hamstring injury in the bottom of the sixth inning against Kentucky.
The Aggies are coming off a 5-1 win over Kentucky in the CWS to clinch the double-elimination tournament’s best record and a second semifinal appearance. The Gators need to beat Texas A&M on Wednesday night and Thursday to advance to the best-of-three championship series.
Florida kept its season in elimination games with wins against North Carolina State on Monday and Kentucky on Wednesday morning. Led by Jack Caligone and his 35 home runs, Florida was the last team out of 64 to qualify for the tournament and has an 8-1 record in elimination games.
The Aggies lead the team’s career record with a 17-14 record. Texas A&M is 2-2 against Florida this year, losing two of their three regular-season meetings in Gainesville. This game will mark the second time the two teams have met in the NCAA postseason.
