The Tesla Cybertruck’s software is still lacking in features compared to other models, but Tesla is working to fix this. The 2024.8.4 software update brings the Cybertruck closer to its sibling with features like automatic wipers, one-time charging limit, and more. The Cybertruck doesn’t yet have basic Autopilot, let alone the self-driving features offered by other Tesla models.

Tesla began deliveries of the Cybertruck last November, but the production truck wasn’t as impressive as the one unveiled in 2019. Most notably, people complained about the range not meeting expectations, the long charging times, and the lack of some features. However, Tesla provided the technology department with cutting-edge technology unique to the Cybertruck. With so many new features that still need polishing, it’s no wonder the Cyber truck’s software is still not on par with his other Tesla models.
The Cybertruck has a steer-by-wire system instead of a mechanical steering system. It also has a 48-volt electrical system, which requires completely new parts that are not available off-the-shelf. These changes alone mean the Cybertruck software is significantly different from the software installed on other Tesla vehicles. This requires a separate software team for development, testing, and validation, and Cybertruck lags behind in terms of functionality. But that doesn’t mean Tesla isn’t working to fill the gap.
In February, the Cybertruck received its first over-the-air update since deliveries began. The 2024.2.3 update significantly improves ride comfort and handling, and optimizes charging based on DC fast charging station capabilities. Now, a new software update brings the Cybertruck closer to other Tesla models in terms of functionality. The 2024.8.4 update adds automatic wipers, one-time charge limit, and the option to view and reset tire mileage on your Tesla Cybertruck.
Perhaps the most important is the automatic wiper. However, it remains to be seen whether this will work better than other Tesla EVs. Owners have been complaining for a long time about the lack of automatic wipers. Instead of using a rain sensor, Tesla insisted on using camera input to see if it’s raining. This causes many false positives and requires dry wiping when the weather clears. There’s also an awkward moment when the wipers stay off even though it’s raining outside. There is also a manual override, but it usually doesn’t work when autopilot is on.
That’s why owners cheered when Tesla introduced the option to turn off the wipers even when driving on Autopilot. This has not yet been implemented in the Cybertruck. According to the release notes, turning on the autopilot feature will automatically set the wipers to automatic. What’s the most interesting thing? Tesla’s Cybertruck doesn’t yet have an autopilot feature because Tesla hasn’t perfected the software.
This update introduces several Cybertruck-specific features, including a trailer alarm and Bluetooth headphones for rear passengers. The former means that the vehicle alarm also monitors whether the trailer is connected to the hitch. Finally, this update allows the rear passenger to pair up to two sets of his Bluetooth headphones so he can watch shows or play games on the rear touchscreen. The front passenger can still hear other audio from the front.
