The Seattle Mariners had their four-game winning streak snapped by the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday. The Mariners were blown out in a heartbreaking 8-0 defeat. The loss dropped the Mariners to 44-32 for the season, but they still comfortably hold first place in the American League West. As we do after every game, here’s what you need to know.
This was a frustrating game for a number of reasons. First, Brian Woo overcame arm discomfort to start for the first time in 12 days, but he threw 64 pitches (about 30 in one inning) and only four innings. He gave up three earned runs. Relief pitchers including Mike Baumann, Cody Bolton and Eduardo Buzardo each gave up runs over the next four innings. Offensively, the Mariners struck out 14 batters, but they weren’t helped by home plate umpire Doug Eddings (more on that later).
Leading 1-0 in the second inning, Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan hit a rare home run off Woo to give Cleveland a 3-0 lead.
Naylor hit the first of his two home runs off Baumann in the fifth inning to put Cleveland up 6-0.
Naylor hit another home run off Buzzard in the eighth inning, making the score 8-0 and ending the scoring for the day.
On the umpire side, a Mariners player was ejected for the second straight night. JP Crawford was ejected for arguing balls and strikes, as was manager Scott Servais. Luke Reilly was ejected on Tuesday.
Julio Rodriguez returned to the hit column with a single…Josh Rojas and Dom Canzone had the Mariners’ remaining two hits on the night…Four Mariners players struck out multiple times in the game…Wu only struck out once and improves to 3-1 on the season…The teams will face off on Thursday at 10:10 a.m. PST.
