At least 24 people, including 12 infants, died in the past 24 hours at a government hospital in Nanded, Maharashtra. The cause is said to be a shortage of medicines.
The incident was reported due to shortage of medicines at Shankarao Chavan Government Medical College Hospital.
Dr Shamrao Wakode, principal dean of the medical college, said the deceased were suffering from various ailments including snake bite, arsenic and phosphorous poisoning.
“About 12 children have died in the last 24 hours… 12 adults have also died from various illnesses (snake bites, arsenic and phosphorous poisoning, etc.). Former Nanded CM and senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan said that apart from these deaths, 70 more patients referred from other private hospitals in the district were reported to be in “critical condition”. He said that
