Regular health check-ups not only help maintain good health but also help manage certain health conditions, but unfortunately, health check-ups are not yet part of self-health care in India. Requiring all women to undergo mandatory medical check-ups is critical to women’s health. That’s why we’ve prepared a list of some important medical tests every woman should know to address common health issues and preventive measures.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Sujit Ash, Consultant Gynecology and Obstetrics, PD Hinduja Hospital and MRC, Khar, said, Both have a number of important findings related to age and current/past/family history. The list of blood tests should include a complete blood count with emphasis on hemoglobin, blood sugar levels for diabetes, lipid levels for abnormal cholesterol, and a thyroid evaluation, to name a few. Vitamin D3, B12, Calcium. Basic liver and kidney evaluation. Urinalysis. Ovarian cancer blood marker, or CA-125 (based on age, imaging, and family history).”
As far as imaging studies are concerned, Dr Sujit Ash advised to undergo mammography from the age of 40 to rule out the possibility of breast cancer. “It goes without saying that you are expected to have regular self-breast exams once a month, as well as annual breast exams by your doctor. A DEXA scan or bone density scan is recommended to check for ovarian conditions, such as endometriosis, if a woman is going through menopause and, by extension, osteoporosis. This is one of the tests we recommend in the early detection process.
The most important screening test for women in India is the pap smear for cervical cancer screening. Dr. Sujit Ash said, “Vaccination is recommended every 3 to 5 years for the age group of 21 to 65 years, depending on sexual history, surgical history, and previous cervical cancer test reports.” I made it. This is the most valuable test that has saved the lives of countless women. This may be supplemented with a cardiac evaluation (with ECG and 2D echo), dental, eye, and ENT tests for more detailed tests. In fact, these tests are not only useful for doctors to rule out potential health problems, but they can sometimes even help diagnose and predict diseases. ”
Adding to the list of important medical check-ups that every woman should know about, Dr. Mini Salunkhe, Director and Head of Obstetrics, Sahyadri Hospital, Pune, highlighted,
- breast examination: Breast cancer is a serious concern all over the world, including India. Perform a monthly self-breast exam to check for abnormal changes or lumps in your breast tissue. As well as regular breast self-exams, it is very important to schedule a clinical breast exam annually. It is recommended that women over age 40 have a mammogram every 1 to 2 years, or sooner if there is a family history of breast cancer.
- Awareness about cervical cancer: Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in India. Awareness and preventive measures such as vaccinations are important. There is a vaccine that can significantly reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Early vaccination, especially before she is exposed to HPV (human papillomavirus), provides protection against her HPV strains that are most likely to cause cervical cancer. After age 21 or within three years of becoming sexually active, a woman should have regular pelvic exams to check for signs of cervical cancer or other reproductive health problems. You should get a pap smear. It’s important to include a pap smear in your annual health screening routine. A Pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. Helps detect precancerous or cancerous cells in the cervix. Early detection through regular Pap smears can lead to successful treatment and significantly reduce the risk of cervical cancer.
- Active vaccination: Two doses of cervical cancer vaccine are recommended for protection in both adolescent girls and boys. This not only prevents cervical cancer, but also other types of cancer, such as rectal cancer. Vaccination is most effective when given before sexual activity begins because it prevents initial HPV infection.
- Ultrasound examination of the abdomen and pelvis: Annual abdominal and pelvic ultrasounds are recommended to diagnose ovarian cancer early. Early intervention can save lives. Be especially careful if you have a family history of ovarian cancer and consult your gynecologist for personalized advice and screening recommendations.
- Uterine health: Occasional or abnormal bleeding can be a warning sign of several uterine medical conditions, such as uterine fibroids, polyps, and even uterine cancer. Tell your doctor if you experience any unusual bleeding patterns.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): PCOS is a common lifestyle disease that affects a significant number of women. Focusing on a healthy lifestyle, such as regular exercise and a balanced diet, is essential to managing and reducing PCOS symptoms.
- Postmenopausal bleeding: Bleeding after menopause is not normal and should be seen by a doctor immediately. Bleeding after menopause can be a sign of endometrial cancer or other serious health problems.
- Fertility concerns: The stress of modern lifestyles can affect fertility in both men and women. If you are having difficulty conceiving, it is important to seek the guidance and support of a gynecologist early in the process for appropriate testing and treatment.
- bone density screening: Women are at increased risk of osteoporosis, especially after menopause. Bone density testing is recommended for women over 65 or younger who are at risk.
- Thyroid function test: Women are more prone to thyroid disease. Regular TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) tests can help detect abnormalities early.
Getting regular checkups and being proactive about your reproductive health can make a big difference in early detection and treatment of many diseases. Always seek individual advice and follow-up from a women’s health professional or physician regarding any concerns you may have regarding your health.
