The Gambling Reform Alliance has announced the appointment of Martin Thomas as its new chief executive.
Alliance board chair Sharon Dixon announced Thomas’ appointment after an extensive nationwide recruiting process. Thomas has served as interim CEO for the past several months.
“Martin brings incredible skills, energy, knowledge and experience to this role at a crucial time for the Alliance and our efforts to deliver real gambling reform across the country.”
“While it was a difficult dilemma to judge the quality and breadth of experience of the candidates who applied, we are confident we have found an excellent candidate within the company who has earned the position on merit and brings the depth of experience and leadership qualities to lead the Alliance to success well into the future.”
Mr Thomas has more than 20 years’ experience in the not-for-profit sector, having previously worked for World Vision Australia, Mission Australia and UNICEF Australia, before serving as CEO of Habitat for Humanity Australia.
He has been a consultant to the Alliance for the past three years as its media director, most recently helping to coordinate the Voices experience program.
Thomas said he is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead at the Alliance. “I have already had the privilege of working with the Alliance’s board and staff and have witnessed first-hand the incredible support we have received from the community to deliver gambling reform,” he said.
Dixon said the board, staff and key stakeholders expect the Alliance to continue to grow in recognition and influence under the new CEO.
“More than a year after the Murphy Report on online gambling was delivered, this is a critical time for gambling reform in Australia as we await the Federal Government’s response,” she said.
“It is disappointing that it has taken the government so long to respond, but we will not shy away from this key area which will remain a key advocacy area for the alliance in the coming months.”
Dixon thanked all the candidates who applied for the position.
