The India Meteorological Department on Friday issued a ‘red’ warning, predicting very heavy rain in several districts of Assam and neighboring Meghalaya in the next 24 hours.
The warning comes at a time when both Assam and Meghalaya have experienced heavy rains in recent days, leading to waterlogging, man-made floods and landslides in both regions.
The IMD Regional Meteorological Center in Guwahati has issued a special weather bulletin that predicts “very intense (7-11 centimeters in 24 hours) to very intense (11-20 centimeters in 24 hours)” in the next 24 hours. A warning was issued. Lower Assam districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta and Bongaigaon experienced “very heavy rains (more than 20 cm in 24 hours)”.
Guwahati city is already facing man-made floods due to continuous rains over the past few days.
Floods in Guwahati have been a serious concern for residents for many years. Due to continuous rain over the past few days, large parts of Guwati city have been submerged under water.
The human-induced flooding and inundation situation is rapidly deteriorating, causing havoc for urban residents.
The people of Guwahati are in a difficult situation. Students living on the outskirts of the city are at an academic disadvantage as it is difficult to access educational institutions and schools.
Meanwhile, most educational institutions are closed today due to massive flooding. Semester and semi-annual exams for educational institutions have also been postponed.
Remarkably, the city is repeatedly submerged under water due to a single cause: a malfunctioning drainage system. It is common to experience multiple human-induced floods during each rainy season.
Therefore, the only concern for residents is whether the government will take any action against this huge and unnecessary man-made flood.
Meanwhile, the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration on Friday announced a helpline number in view of the man-made floods across Guwahati city.
The control room helpline number that citizens can call to register their complaints and seek instructions and assistance is 9365429314.
“Guwahati residents may contact the district administration helpline number if they require assistance in case of waterlogging or other issues,” officials said.
Areas like Urubali, Rajgarh, Anil Nagar, Navin Nagar, Gandhi Basti, Hatigaon, Zoo Road, Borubali and RG Barua Road are experiencing unprecedented water levels. Normal life in Guwahati has been affected.
