India recorded 692 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours. The total number of active cases rose by four to reach 4,097, according to data from the Federal Ministry of Health.
According to official data, six deaths were reported in the country in the past 24 hours, two in Maharashtra and one each in Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala and West Bengal.
With this, the total number of coronavirus cases in India since its outbreak in January 2020 has reached 45,010,944, an increase of 702 in the last 24 hours. The total number of deaths due to the coronavirus infection in India has increased to 533,346, reflecting an increase of six deaths in the last 24 hours.
Delhi on Wednesday reported its first case of Covid-19 variant JN.1.
“Delhi has reported its first case of Omicron subvariant JN.1. Of the three samples sent for genome sequencing, one was JN.1 and two were Omicron. Yes,” said Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj.
In particular, the JN.1 subvariant is a descendant of the Omicron subvariant known as BA.2.86 or Pirola. The first case of the JN.1 variant of Covid-19 has been reported in Kerala.
A total of 109 cases of the JN.1 subvariant have been detected in India till Wednesday, health ministry officials said. However, the World Health Organization stressed that the overall risk posed by JN.1 remains low based on current evidence.
Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has issued guidelines for suspected or positive cases of coronavirus to be reported to hospitals following a surge in coronavirus cases in the country.
The director of AIIMS Delhi on Wednesday held a meeting with heads of all departments of the hospital on the coronavirus emergency response plan. The meeting discussed policies regarding coronavirus testing, areas designated as positive patients, and hospitalization.
