“We’re thrilled to welcome Alina Hartounian to Newshub as editor in chief of the afternoon and early evening hours. As NPR’s editor in chief, Alina will lead a team of digital reporters and editors, as well as coordinate news coverage with desks and programs across the network.
Alina comes to NPR from The Associated Press, where she served as U.S. affairs manager, helping assign stories, providing standards guidance and mobilizing teams to cover major breaking news stories.
Alina has worked social newsgathering for the AP and has been involved in many major breaking news stories, including elections, mass shootings and the January 6th riots. When Hurricane Ian hit, she launched the social newsgathering team to find the best content online. Under her leadership, the team has collected over a dozen videos, produced several bylines and broken major stories.
During her nearly 15 years at The Associated Press, Alina helped lay the foundation for social media newsgathering, standards and promotion, edited and led visuals for some of the biggest stories on immigration during the Trump Administration and served as AP’s global eyes and ears during the U.S. evening hours throughout the pandemic.
Alina is based in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she lives with her husband, two kids, and a desert tortoise named Dottie. She wakes up too early to go for a run, but she’s also an avid fan of homemade cocktails and trashy TV shows.
