Summer is here and triple-digit temperatures are forecast for the next few days.
Remember, pets need special care during heatwaves. In the Pacific Northwest, it can be hard to keep your four-legged friends cool in the summer. While humans sweat when they get hot, dogs and cats pant.
If you see the sign below, you might be tempted to walk your dog early in the morning and late at night.
Tips to keep your pets comfortable in the heat
• Always have cool, clean water available. Have two bowls available in case one is knocked over. If your pet is outdoors, make sure they are in the shade.
• Leave your pets at home during hot weather. Pets are more comfortable in the coolness of a home than in a hot car.
• If you must travel with your pet in hot weather, bring an extra thermos of fresh, cold water just for your pet. If you have air conditioning, use it. Never leave your pet in a parked car; your pet could suffer heat stroke, brain damage, or death.
• If you know it will be a hot day, close the blinds in your room to block out the sunlight. This will help keep the room cooler.
Watch for signs of heat stroke, which include:
• Sudden shortness of breath
• Apathy
• Drooling
• weakness
• Muscle tremors and weakness
Keep heatstroke-stricken pets in a cool, shady place and give them cool water. Contact your veterinarian immediately. Read more about pet safety in hot weather here.
