Frutania Ltd has partnered with Aldi Süd to develop the exclusive Aldina strawberry concept.
A few weeks ago, a new innovation called Aldina appeared on the strawberry shelves at Ardi Süd (reported by FreshPlaza.de). This tasty, long-lasting strawberry variety is grown exclusively by 11 growers from the Furtania Group based in different growing regions of Germany. “With Aldina, Aldi Süd is focusing on a wider range of strawberry varieties. This strong positioning aims to appeal to different consumer groups. Furthermore, the variety is grown on protected, resource-saving plots and is associated with clear quality specifications. In this respect, Aldina also contains a quality promise,” reports Furtania’s management.
Dr. Markus Schmitt from Sonnenbergerhof is one of the selected Aldina growers.
Despite the difficult weather conditions, customer feedback has so far been satisfactory: “The variety is characterised by its flavour, firmness of the skin and flesh, good storage life and cone-shaped fruits. Along with production, we are continuously working on improving the quality of our strawberries. On the other hand, low yields are currently one of our biggest challenges.”
The trend towards monopolization of the fruit shelf
The variety concept is a complete package that includes a strong group of growers, special varieties and cultivation methods, but also the efficient logistics of the Furtania Group. The exclusivity strategy will continue to be pursued in the future. “We invest heavily every year to acquire new varieties and technologies, which also allow us to offer exclusive programs. Conceptually, we will also consider other varieties,” the company concludes.
