The post Why Krukow Loved Doval’s Angry Cool Spike in Giants’ Win Originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
Closer Camilo Doval vented his anger at a cooler in the dugout late in the Giants’ 13-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday at Oracle Park, but announcer Mike Krukow saw nothing wrong with the incident.
“It was amazing. I loved it,” Krukow said Monday on KNBR’s “Murph and Marcus.” “I was pissed, I went out and [and throw stuff]Everyone in the dugout was happy about it because they knew he learned his lesson. You were frustrated and embarrassed in front of 41,000 people, but I had no problem with it. [throwing the cooler]I had no problem with that at all.
“I think he actually had a little tantrum and let everybody know he was upset. He was a sulky 3-year-old and totally acted like it when he got back to the dugout. Get off your chest and move on. You’ve still got a lot of baseball left in you.”
Doval, an All-Star last season, has struggled this season with a 4.71 ERA in 30 games.
Doval, who was the winning pitcher on Sunday, threw 29 pitches in 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, four earned runs and walking two. He hadn’t pitched since June 12, and manager Bob Melvin was looking to rest his star reliever.
After being ejected from the game by manager Melvin, Doval drank from a cooler, threw his glove and yelled expletives as he walked down the stairs to the Giants’ clubhouse.
Doval didn’t have to wait long to redeem himself, recording a save in the Giants’ come-from-behind 7-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night at Wrigley Field. He pitched one scoreless inning and needed just 11 pitches to get out three batters, Patrick Wisdom, David Vaught and Cody Bellinger, in order.
Doval’s moment of anger might have been exactly what was needed to change the course of the season.
