A man was shot in the face, chest and stomach in Sydney’s west overnight, the second shooting to shock Sydney in less than 24 hours.
NSW Police were called to Brackett at around 9pm on Wednesday following multiple reports of a shooting in which a man was injured.
Officers found a 29-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body on Niland Crescent, about five minutes from Mt Druitt.
Photos shared on social media by local residents also show a Thor helicopter responding to the incident, as well as a report from a CareFlight helicopter.
Paramedics treated him at the scene and he was taken to Westmead Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.
“Police have located the scene and are investigating the incident,” a NSW Police spokesperson said in a statement.
A dog unit was also brought in to search the area for clues.
The burnt-out car was later found in Agnes Banks, about 30 minutes from the scene of the shooting, The Daily Telegraph reported.
The incident comes just 24 hours after Vailena Koloamatangi, 27, was also shot in the head and chest while riding in a Toyota in the underground car park of an apartment building in Campsie.
He and another man were sitting in a car when the gunman unloaded his bullets. His friend managed to escape, but Koloamatangi was seriously injured.
Police believe the attack was targeted, and underworld sources told The Daily Telegraph that Koloamatangi had previously been injured in a shooting incident in 2020.
The 27-year-old was riding in the car with his school friend Hasan Goktas at the time. Both were wounded but survived the gunfire.
Goktas was also shot in the abdomen and seriously injured in 2012.
The newspaper cited police as saying the attack was believed to be linked to a feud between Goktas’ family and Bassam Hamzy, founder of the Brothers for Life gang.
There is no suggestion that the men mentioned are involved in gang activity.
Three cars were found on fire in three suburbs after the Campsie shooting.
In Kingsgrove, a vehicle crashed into a home before bursting into flames.
Detectives are trying to determine whether the Brackett shooting and the Campsie shooting are related due to the close timing of the two incidents.
Police have set up the Magnus Task Force to investigate multiple shootings that occurred in July this year. Since 2020, there have been 25 gangland-related shootings.
Anyone with information or dashcam or CCTV footage from the area from around 9pm on Wednesday is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
