TikTok was attacked by the US government, banned in India and may not be available in China, but as of February it was the world’s most profitable app. TikTok’s $189 million in revenue nearly doubled the next most profitable app, YouTube’s $111 million.
Actually, this isn’t all that surprising.
According to mobile analytics vendor AppFigures, TikTok was also the highest-grossing app in January and December of 2023, although records are being broken a bit. And also in November and September. In fact, it has been the highest grossing app globally for at least 15 consecutive months.
TikTok has almost two sources of income. One is advertising, which is not covered in this report (although it is also very lucrative). The second is in-app purchases. Users purchase coins for approximately $0.02 each (minimum purchase amount is 65 coins at a time). These coins can be given to creators as comment tips during live streams, or used to promote individual posts to make them more visible to others.
The result of this report is that people are buying a large amount of coins on TikTok. TikTok leverages the chip much more effectively than Facebook, Twitter, Snap, and even Instagram, and has been doing so for a long time.
In total, the top grossing apps in the world last month were:
- TikTok: $189 million
- YouTube: $111 million
- Disney Plus: $107 million
- Tinder: $85 million
- Max (ex-HBO): $58 million
- LinkedIn: $39 million
- Bumble: $39 million
- Hulu: $34 million
- Peacock TV: $33 million
- Audible: $33 million
Ariel Michaeli, CEO of AppFigures, said that while TikTok’s revenue is down slightly, so is global mobile revenue.
“TikTok was the world’s highest-grossing app in February, with net revenue from the App Store and Google Play reaching $189 million, according to our estimates,” Michaeli says. “It’s slightly lower than January, but not enough to cause concern.”
He added that global revenue for the top 10 in-app revenues in February was $728 million, down 3% from January’s $748 million.
And TikTok has been at the top of the leaderboard for a long time, at least since December 2022.
“I really can’t remember when TikTok wasn’t the leader in our rankings,” Michaeli said last month.
TikTok continues to print money as the US government seeks to force the sale of the Chinese-owned app in 2024. But the question is whether all this negative government attention will ultimately impact both TikTok’s key talent and the app’s U.S. users, who likely account for the bulk of its revenue. is.
