Rosanne Cash revived lesser known Johnny Cash hits and turned them into bona fide smashes. Kings Record Shop To gold selling status.
There was a bit of a stir over “Tennessee Flat Top Box.” Rosanne knew the song by heart, having grown up as Johnny’s daughter, but had no idea that Johnny had actually written it, and the Nashville press created a bit of a stir over it. This prompted Johnny to speak out himself, stating that he was even more proud that Rosanne had recorded the song, because she clearly had done so because she recognized the value of the song, not to glorify it itself.
What’s great about this record is that it keeps the classic rhythm of Johnny Cash’s early records while updating the production to fit modern country radio of the late ’80s. The song was one of Cash’s six consecutive No. 1 singles and is her most memorable country radio hit after “Seven Year Ache,” and rightly so.
